1) Watch for speed traps in Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama. Above
all, if you do get a ticket, be courteous.
2) Do not make this trip alone. We know a couple of Americans who have
done it, but there can be problems.
3) Budget your time and money accordingly.
4) Travel with original documents and have any important papers
translated into Spanish.
5) Be sure not to leave any valuables in your car when it is unattended.
6) Again, make sure you car is good mechanical shape.
7) Keep your cash, traveller's checks and other small valuables in a money
belt.
8) Have a lot of dollar bills to hand out for tips.
9) Get all of your tourist visas ahead of time.
10) Find out all of the current exchange rates before you reach the border,
so you won't get ripped off.
11) When travelling hide your money in several places in the car so as to
not have all of it in one place.
12) Don't carry handguns unless you like to spend time in jail and pay huge
fines.
13) Make sure you understand the right-of-way system for each country.
14) Don't go off onto any side roads or unmarked routes.
15) NEVER drive at night.
