The car had been running like a clock until mid-morning. Then every
time I would try to accelerate to pass a truck or bus, my engine would cut
out like we were running out of gas. My gas gauge showed that I had plenty,
so it had to be either the carburetor or a plugged gas line. My speed was
slowed down considerably. I could see by the map that we would be
coming to a sizable town in just a few miles. There were always Pemex
stations in the larger towns, so all I had to do was get there. So long as I
did not try to go too fast, it just seemed to plug along, but at a constantly
slower speed.
We finally came to a town called Matehuala, which is about 200 miles
south of Monterrey. We pulled into a Pemex station at the near edge of town,
but they had no mechanic. They told me to go see a guy called "Madino"
in town. In trying to find him, we came to a large automobile agency, so
we pulled into their garage. Again, they told us to see Madino. They
indicated that he was right up the street we were on. We drove to the end
of the street, but could see anything that indicated "Madino". We pulled
into another small gas station on a street corner about midtown. I was trying
to find someone to ask when suddenly I saw a little single car garage on
the side street with the name "Madino" above the door. I drove over and
parked next to his driveway and found a young man in his mid-twenties
inside. He verified his name was "Madino".
With Audrey's assistance we explained to him what the car had been
doing. He took the car for a test drive with Audrey along to answer any
questions. In 10 minutes they returned. He raised the hood and started
taking the gas lines apart. He would blow on a line and his partner would
listen in the gas tank. Satisfied with their findings, he took the gas filter
off. He did not have a Plymouth filter, but came out with a "universal"
filter which he replaced after modifying the gas line. When he had it
replaced, he got back in the car for another test drive. In a few minutes he
returned completely satisfied with his work. He charged me $25.00. I was
happy, and so was he.
If you happen to be having a problem with your car and you are near
Matehuala, I strongly recommend Hugo Madino for the job.
