After publishing the first edition of this book
in 1992, we received numerous suggestions that we
include accounts of other people's trips along the
Pan-American Highway in future editions of this
guidebook. While I was contemplating where I
could get more current information, I received a
letter from Laurie Gonzáles, manager of the Belén Trailer Park located off
Highway 1, between the International Airport and the city of San José,
Costa Rica. Since that is only about five miles from my home, I decided
to drive over and check it out.
When I arrived at the trailer park, I found it was bustling with activity.
There was a caravan of seventeen recreation vehicles that were making a
tour of Central America, and were on their way to Panama the following
day. The manager, a very nice American lady, who had lived in Costa Rica
for about 10 years, told me the RV owners would be stopping over for a
few days on their way back up north. So, I decided to interview another
couple who had been there for a while longer. You can read about their
journey on the next page.
If you have recently driven through Mexico or Central America by car,
RV or camper, why don't you share your story with others who would like
to hear the details of your trip. Send us your story, and please include
information about the RV parks, campgrounds or hotels where you stayed.
Please include as much information as possible about facilities, costs, etc..
Include any printed material you may have picked-up such as brochures.
We will put your information into a story format, and return it for your
approval. Acknowledgement will be given for your efforts.
