This story is slightly crazy but true. Richard Krug, a friend of ours,
bought an old Greyhound bus in California to take to Costa Rica so he could
start a charter tour company. He customized and completely refurbished
it: repainting it, installing spacious airplane seats, putting in a bar with a
small refrigerator and a good stereo system. Together with three helpers,
he drove the bus to Costa Rica in just a little over four days including
border stops.
How did they accomplish this feat? What they did was drive in four
hour shifts so as to not get too tired. Two people slept while one drove
and the other person kept him company so he wouldn't fall asleep at the
wheel. They only stopped for, gas, food and other necessities along the way.
Pesonally we think they were foolish to drive at night because of
livestock that may stray onto the road. We heard of a couple of case where
people collided with cows and completely destroyed their cars. People
have even been killed as a result of accidents with livestock.
Poor lighting and many desolate stretches of highway also pose a
danger. You also increase your chances of getting robbed if you drive when
it is dark. We have heard several horror stories with sad endings about
people who were assaulted while driving through Mexico and Central
America at night.
