Manuel Antonio, located in Quepos in the Central Pacific Coast, features a blend of some of the best beaches in the country with entertainment, comfort and night life. Inside the national park, you'll be stunned by the beaches as well as its wildlife, especially the mischievous capuchin monkeys.
Dominical is a jovial town that is now becoming a major tourist attraction. This area features beautiful natural scenery and surfing beaches as well as comfort and evolving development.
In the South Pacific, located in the Osa Peninsula, lays the Corcovado National Park. This remote location is one of the most important refuges for endangered land mammals like jaguars, peccaries and tapirs. Also great for bird watching, this area is great for those looking for a truly natural encounter. Drake Bay or Carate are the entry points to this wonderful national park. The Dulce Gulf is a great location for water sports such as fishing, dolphin viewing and kayaking.
In the Nicoya Peninsula, there are four towns that stand out the most: Tambor, Montezuma, Santa Teresa and Mal País. These are rustic and quiet locations, excellent for surfing, however they offer very nice accommodation options.
Guanacaste, in the northwest, is the driest part of the country, and offers the largest selection of beach hotel options. Close to Liberia, the most popular options in this part are Papagayo, Hermosa, Playa del Coco, Ocotal, Flamingo, Conchal, Playa Grande, Tamarindo, Langosta, Ostional, Nosara, Sámara and Carrillo.
Coco's Island, located far in the Pacific, is reachable only by boat cruises and is a destination for serious scuba divers. The marine wildlife is abundant and exuberant. This is one of three sites in Costa Rica included in UNESCO´s World Heritage list.
On the Caribbean side, Tortuguero in the north and Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo in the south are the most important locations. Tortuguero is a well known destination, especially for its canals, but most importantly for being a nesting site for green turtles. Turtle season goes from July to October, but it's an interesting place to visit year round. Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo are laid back towns with beautiful and exuberant beaches as well as many dining and entertainment options.
The volcanoes are located in the central part of the country. There are several active ones that are immensely fascinating and are well worth a visit. Poás and Irazú can be visited as day trips from San José, the country's capital.
Arenal, in La Fortuna is one of the country's most visited locations. This volcano is the only cone shaped one in the country, and on clear nights, you can see the lava flowing out of its crater. Many activities are available in La Fortuna, such as horseback riding, white water rafting, hot springs, canopy tours and hiking.
Further north, Rincón de la Vieja is the most scenically diverse, offering waterfalls, boiling mud pools and different kinds of vegetation and forest levels. This is a suggested trip for those looking for an off the beaten path and beautiful location, with many adventurous activities.
Monteverde is a charming and peaceful country side destination. The small town of Santa Elena was founded by the Quakers and has now become a major tourist attraction for its beautiful cloud forest and wildlife.
