This world renowned grouping of 19 islands located 1,000 kilometers off the shores of South America is home to some of the most impressive species of animals in the world. Because of the islands’ isolation and the uncommon seismic and volcanic activity, many of the Galapagos animals have adapted into endemic species found only on the islands including land iguanas, giant marine turtles, and Darwin’s famous finches.

Built atop the ruins of the Incan Empire, Quito was founded in the 1500s and is the capital of Ecuador. Quito is said to be the best preserved historic town in all of Latin America with its Baroque architecture apparent in various churches, monasteries, palaces, and public buildings. Today, the city is an energetic center home to more than two million residents.

Founded in 1557, this colonial city is well known for its impressive city planning that took place some 30 years before construction began. Amazingly enough, Cuenca still maintains the same town plan it has had for more than 400 years. Today, the city is a diverse blend of locals and immigrants and is an important agricultural and administrative center as the country’s third largest city.
