Many parts of Nicaragua are still only accessible by boat.
The most popular boating destination is Ometepe Island,
located in Lake Nicaragua. Boats and ferries depart from San
Jorge, Rivas, to Moyogalpa, Ometepe (one hour) at 9 am, 9:30
am, 10:30 (ferry) and 11:30, and 1:30, 2:30 (ferry), 3:30, 4:30
Travelling by boat is one way to get around Nicaragua.and 5:30 (ferry) pm. Boats also depart from Granada to
Altagracia, Ometepe (3 hours) at noon on Saturday and at 1 pm
on Monday and Thursday. Boats and ferries cost less than $2.
The Río San Juan is another area that is only accessible by boat.
Collective water taxis leave several times a day from San Carlos
to El Castillo, about 1.5 hours away. Traveling the length of the
river, to Greytown, takes several days through the jungle.
Private boats can also be hired on the river, but they are expensive
due to high gas prices.
