In this adventurous tour through the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, you will see some amazing flora and fauna and will learn about the local style of life in the jungle. The highlight is a visit to the Pacaya Samiria Reserve
Day 1 Arrival in Iquitos (L, D)
We start our adventure at the Iquitos City Airport, from where we will transport you in a comfortable air-conditioned minivan towards the town of Nauta, the first township founded by the Spanish at the Marañón River’s bank. The 97 km journey takes approximately 1.30 hours. In Nauta we will take boats, and we’ll visit the Ucayali and Marañón River, where the Amazon River is born; from here we have a spectacular sight of the forest because of the 100 foot high watching tower. Next we will go on with our trip to the lodge for lunch and accommodation. In the afternoon, we will go on a hike through the rainforest that surrounds the lodge, to appreciate its flora and fauna. Weather permitting; we will make a night excursion by boat to observe nocturnal animals and insects. Later we will be back to the lodge for dinner.
Day 2 Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (B, D, BB)
At dawn, we will make a small hike through the forest around the lodge, searching for birds. After breakfast, we will go to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve where we will first register our entry. Here we will make a special excursion to observe the "gray" and "pink” dolphins down the Yanayacu River. The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is known as the “jungle of the mirrors, as the black waters of the rivers reflect the sky, the clouds, the bank’s vegetation and the huge trees. At noon we will stop to have our box lunch. We will visit Japon and Plantano lakes (cochas), with a great variety of palms, large trees and a beautiful landscape. At this place, we can make a variety of activities, such as canoe rides, piranha fishing, plant identification, bird watching or maybe cool off with a swim in one of the lakes. At the end of the day, we will go back to the lodge for dinner.
Day 3 Nauta Creek / Iquitos (B, D, BB)
We will go on with our bird watching session very early this morning followed by breakfast at the lodge. Immediately after, we make an excursion by boat around the Nauta Creek and the closest lakes, where we observe flora and fauna (such as monkeys, sloths and wide variety of aquatic birds). We will stop for a while to enjoy our box lunch under the shadow of the surrounding jungle trees. Later, during our excursion to the primary forest, the guide will identify medicinal plants and trees of special interest. Finally we go back to the lodge for dinner.
Day 4 Riverbank Village / Iquitos (B, L)
After breakfast we will visit a riverbank village to observe the native’s lifestyle as well as their daily activities such as hunting, gathering, fishing or agriculture. We can also collaborate with the community development buying typical souvenirs hand made by the natives, made of seeds and vegetable ivory called tagua. Immediately after lunch, we will go back to the Iquitos City Airport ready to aboard our flight back to Lima.
