While visiting Perú, you'll be able to learn about the Inca Empire, the most powerful culture in Pre-Columbian South America. The sacred city of Machu Picchu (meaning "Old Mountain" in Quechua), is their most impressive legacy. The "Lost City" was discovered by the Western World in 1911. Since then, it has been astonishing visitors around the world with its magnetic beauty.

Machu Picchu is located in Cusco, capital of the Inca rule. This ancient city has also captivated visitors for its blend of Incan structures and colonial architecture. Both Machu Picchu and Cusco are World Heritage sites declared by UNESCO.
For the serious adventurer, it is possible to hike along the Inca Trail, the route the Incas used to walk from Cusco to Machu Picchu.

Another majestic Inca site near Cusco is Pisac, known for its astronomical observatory. Its architecture is a blend of Incan and colonial style, and in its colorful main plaza you will find an opportunity to shop for crafts that will take you back you to the ancient times!

The Orient Express Railway is the luxurious way to travel through the Andes, with routes through Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. This is for sure the best way to experience the Andes!

Also part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas is Ollantaytambo, located in the Urubamba province. This complex is known for its fortress walls, as well as for being an important religious, agricultural and military compound in the old Inca days.

In the Vilcabamba mountain range, Choquequirao is another important Inca site, far more secluded than Machu Picchu but equally impressive. It takes a challenging two day hike, but it is well worth the effort!

Another not to miss travel destination is Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, at 12 500 feet above sea level (3809 meters). The breathtaking scenery is something that can not be described in words or shown in pictures...you have to see it for yourself! In the lake banks, the charming city of Puno is located, famous for its traditional dances and crafts. From here, you can visit the ancestral culture of the Uros, who live on traditional houses they build on artificial floating islands.

The mythical Nazca lines, which can be appreciated from the air, are geometrical silhouettes representing animal figures. These were created by the Nazca culture over a thousand years ago.

Arequipa, the second largest city also called the "White City" due to their construction material, a white volcanic stone unique to the area ("cillar") is an excellent site to visit for its volcanoes, valleys, culture and outdoor adventure opportunities. North of the city the Colca Canyon, the world's deepest, is located. This place is famous for its beauty, for its rafting and kayaking during the summer, and for its common Condor sightings!

Lima, Peru's capital is also a must, as the most modern city in Lima; it offers a rich variety of activities like museums, gastronomy, shopping, history and culture. Its historical center is a mandatory stop for any traveler!

Huaraz, located in the Cordillera Blanca, is your base to visit the wonderful Huascaran National Park. It boasts with magnificent natural beauty due to its snow peaks and glacial lakes. It also features Peru's highest peak: Huascarán Mountain. This place is excellent for trekking and other mountain sports.

The cities of Trujillo and Chiclayo in the northwest are important for its colonial heritage and architecture, as well as for nearby pre Inca archeological sites. Chan Chan citadel, near Trujillo, is heritage of the Mochica-Chimu Indians, and features important monuments and temples. In Lambayeque, near Chiclayo, is located the Lord of Sipan mausoleum (El Señor de Sipán), an intact tomb discovered in 1987. Its richness has amazed tourists ever since.

Iquitos, located amidst the Amazon, is the perfect place to choose if you are looking for an "eco vacation". Enjoy a cruise in the Amazon River, or learn about the local indigenous culture. Here, nature awaits you in its purest forms.

Manu National Park is Peru's largest natural reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It's important for its overwhelming biodiversity: one of the utmost of the world. This diversity is due to the fact that the reserve covers a quite large altitudinal gradient, and so all the ecological zones possible in the Amazon Basin.

For wildlife enthusiasts, there is plenty to see in Perú. With an outstanding diversity of over 1800 species of birds (of which more than 100 are endemic), Peru is the ultimate birdwatcher's paradise. Some of the most eye catching are the Andean Cock-of-the-Rocks (Peru's national bird), Hoatzin, Andean Condor, hummingbirds, macaws, and many more.
In the pristine protected areas, you may be able to spot monkeys and tamarins, otters and grisons, capybaras and pacas, brockets and deer, the spectacled bear, among several other types of mammals.
