Tierradentro & San Agustin Archaeological Tour
(8 Days / 7 Nights)

Discover the marks left by the pre-Hispanic societies that inhabited Colombia. Visit San Agustin and Tierradentro,two of the most important archaeological locations. The San Agustín Archaeological Park, is the only place in the world highlighted by 500 imposing stone statues carved in accordance to the mythology of their Indian sculptors. Tierradentro Archaeological Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO is famous for its abundant archaeological vestiges.

Day 01 Bogota - Tatacoa

Early in the morning flight Bogotá - Neiva. After arrival in Neiva, the capital of the Huila department, 1 - 1.2 hour trip to Villavieja en Tatacoa Desert. In the afternoon departure from your hotel and visit to the Tatacoa Desert, one of the most attractive natural sceneries of Colombia, occupying 330 square kilometers of land, colored ocher and grey with green cactuses. The Tatacoa desert, or the Valley of Sorrows, as it was called in 1538 by the conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, is not just a desert, but a tropical dry forest. The name "Tatacoa" also given by the Spanish, refers to rattlesnakes. During the Tertiary Period, it was wetter, with thousands of flowers and trees, but has been gradually drying up becoming a desert. The Tatacoa Desert is the second largest arid zone in Colombia after the Guajira Peninsula. 2h walk in the desert included and visit to Observatory included.

Overnight at Hotel Oasis de La Tatacoa or Yararaka for 1 night inclufing breakfast.

Day 02 Tatacoa - San Agustin

 After breakfast ,  5-6 hour trip to San Agustín, following the Magdalena river. San Agustin is one of the most important archeological sites in South America, located in a beautiful countryside. Transfer to the hotel and in free afternoon to relax.

Overnight at Hotel Monasterio San Agustin or Akawanka for 3 nights including breakfast. 

Day 03 San Agustin

In the morning, visit of the Archeological park. It includes the "Mesitas" A, B, C, D, the ceremonial fountain "Lavapatas” and the Archeological museum.

Overnight at Hotel.

Day 04 San Agustin

After breakfast visit of the narrowest point of the Magdalena river “El estrecho”. Here the river passes through a small canyon, where it is only 2 meters wide. The journey continuous to the small village of Isnos, where the archeological sites "El Alto de los Ídolos" and "Alto de las Piedras” are visited. Also visit the Mortiño waterfall.

Overnight at Hotel. 

Day 05 San Agustin - Tierradentro

 In the morning, beautiful ride through the central mountain range to San Andrés de Pisimbalá (Tierradentro). The journey takes about 5 hours. Check-In at the hotel, the rest of the day at your own convenience.

Overnight at Hotel El Refugio for 2 nights including breakfast.

Day 06 Tierradentro

In the morning, visit of the archeological park, with its subterraneous grave chambers. Visit of the sites "Alto de Segovia" and "Alto del Duende". In the afternoon walking tour to the peak of the “Aguacate". Overnight at Hotel El Refugio.

Day 07 Tierradentro - Silvia - Popayán

After breakfast, ride to Popayán, one of the most beautiful colonial cities in South America. If this day falls on a Tuesday, the famous indigenous market in Silvia can be visited in the morning. Arrival in the afternoon, checkin at the hotel and rest of the day at own convenience.

Overnight at Hotel La Plazuela or smiliar for 1 night including breakfast. 

Day 08 Popayán

In the Morning, city tour through Popayán, founded in 1537 Popayán is synonymous with culture; it is home to poets, painters and writers. Great colonial architecture is reflected in the houses, churches and bridges, which we will visit during a 3-hour walking tour.  Then, transfer to the Popayán airport and flight to Bogotá or another city.
